Film restoration and encoding by Michael Lauter

These computer simulations were recently rescanned from
the 16mm masters of the best of several film sequences prepared
by brothers
Alar
and Juri Toomre
in 1971 - 1973.
The films illustrate the main points of their 1972 paper
Galactic Bridges and Tails in
The Astrophysical Journal.
(Ap.J. 178, 623) The Brothers Toomre used FORTRAN code, which sent character and vector info to a CRT-based ASCII character film recorder, exposing multiple frames of 16mm film, thereby creating the computer animation. A high-def film scan of the 16mm originals were mastersed as HD (1080p24) video. Before/after restoration sample clip and full-length film. Total Running Time (TRT): 7 mins 12 sec Framerate: 24 fps Average bandwidth: 200 kbits/sec Click the play control to view. (Requires Flash version 9 or higher and enabled JavaScript)
